Calibrated HDRi file (.hdr) and 16-bit RAW (.dng) backplates. Why CG Artists Use PG Skies 1714
Peter Guthrie's "PG Skies" collection became the industry gold standard for 3D artists.

Why does the number "1714" still pop up on paragliding forums in 2025? Because it represents a philosophy that has largely disappeared from modern manufacturing.
One of the technical challenges of shooting HDR skies is capturing the infinite brightness of the sun. In early versions, Peter Guthrie used a method of lowering the gamma of the image to make the bright parts pop. However, this often resulted in harsh colors and an unnatural balance between the sun and the surrounding sky.

Use the bitmap’s output or the dome light’s multiplier to adjust the exposure. In a physical camera setup, a multiplier of 1.0 is usually the ideal starting point.
In the world of architectural visualization (ArchViz) and 3D rendering, few tools have had as profound an impact on lighting workflows as the high-dynamic-range image (HDRI) catalogs created by Peter Guthrie. Among his highly regarded asset library, (officially released as 1714 Clear Sky ) stands out as an industry-standard benchmark.
In the shadow of the Gap lived a cartographer’s apprentice named Elara Venn. She was eighteen, orphaned, and obsessed with the invisible lines of the world—latitude, longitude, the secret geometry of wind and tide. While others prayed, she sketched. While others wept, she measured. That morning, as the silver ribbon pulsed, she stood atop Pridden Hill with a brass astrolabe and a pocket full of charcoal. Calibrated HDRi file (

To combat this limitation, Peter Guthrie updated the map to include an alternative variation called . Influenced by scientific methods shared within the rendering community, this update artificially restores the true, uncapped physical intensity of the sun at a flat gamma of 1.0. The result provides razor-sharp contact shadows and perfectly accurate exposure values without requiring manual color adjustments. Optimization Workflow in Production
