For a public alpha, Malevolent Planet utilizes Unity2D’s features surprisingly well. The developers are using to create a "heat haze" effect over the toxic geysers. The audio is sparse—mostly wind and the crunch of gravel—until Day 3, when a low, rhythmic heartbeat kicks in that syncs with the Driller’s digging speed.
The first day in this public build is a masterclass in environmental storytelling. You spawn inside the wreckage of your pod. The pixel-art style is crisp, utilizing Unity2D’s lighting system to cast long, unsettling shadows across the cockpit.
By Day 3, it was time to make the planet feel truly "Malevolent." We introduced lighting and the first enemy prototype.
