The central theme of The Station Agent is the accidental formation of an "unchosen family." None of these characters would have actively sought each other out. The film is set in the 1980s and revolves around the life of Finbar McBride (played by Peter Dinklage), a dwarf who has spent his entire life working at a railroad yard in New Jersey. Finbar's passion for trains is evident in his meticulous attention to detail and his encyclopedic knowledge of locomotives. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when the railroad yard closes down, and he's left without a job.
The film highlights the concept of "involuntary community." We do not always get to choose who saves us. Fin would never have picked a loud hot dog vendor and a chaotic, grieving artist as his best friends. Yet, because of geographical proximity and shared emptiness, they become exactly what he needs.
